Lil Nas X was joined by Billy Ray Cyrus (naturally), K-pop superstars BTS, Diplo, and Mason Ramsey to perform the track as the “Old Town Road All-Stars ” . No Trent Reznor, but he was there in spirit.
Firstly, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus walked away winners at the 2020 Grammys on Sunday night. Then, Taking home the awards for best music video and best pop duo/group performance. So, the hit topped the Billboard chart in 2019 for a record-breaking 19 weeks.
After their wins, Cyrus paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant. “I’d like to dedicate both to Kobe and his beautiful daughter,” he tweeted. “Sending my thoughts and prayers to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
In the duo’s televised performance of the song, they had some famous faces join them onstage for a highly memorable rendition, including K-pop group BTS, yodeling sensation Mason Ramsey, Diplo, and Nas. The all-star collaboration was a highlight of Sunday’s ceremony.
First, the camera panned slowly to Lil Nas X sitting in a recreation of a living room (which was adorned with a Kobe Bryant jersey, to honor the athlete’s tragic death earlier that day).
The image of the seven members of BTS chair-dancing in sync (in Saint Laurent looks, to boot) will never leave your mind, and you’ll never want it to.
The scenery switched rapidly during the performance, with Lil Nas X dancing in front of a neon-green skull wearing a cowboy hat, then joining Cyrus in front of a glittery pink cow skull. (We hope this isn’t his subtle way of declaring the end of the yeehaw agenda.)
Truly, a great time was had by all.
