The Queen’s grandson Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn Phillips have separated.

Phillips is the son of Princess Anne — the Queen’s second child and only daughter — and her ex-husband Mark Phillips. He is currently 15th in line for the British throne.

A statement, which was published on their behalf, explained that the divorce was “the best course of action for their two children and ongoing friendship”.

The couple, who have been married for 12 years, will share custody of their two children – Savannah, nine, and seven-year-old Isla.

They told the Queen and other members of the royal family about their decision to separate last year. Who are said to be “sad” but “fully supportive”.

“The decision to divorce and share custody came about after many months of discussions and although sad. Is an amicable one,” reads the statement, according to the BBC. So, comes just a few weeks after the Queen’s grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced their plans to end royal duties and split their time between the U.K. and North America, attempting to become financially independent

“Peter Phillips and Autumn have requested privacy and compassion for their children while the family continues to adapt to these changes.”

So, Phillips, who is the eldest grandchild of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, married Autumn Kelly in 2008.

They got married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. The same location as Harry and Meghan, and lived together in Gloucestershire.

The pair are not thought to have attended the Queen’s annual Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace in December. Or the Christmas Day church service at Sandringham, reports the Telegraph.
